Census Wing Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics is the national organization responsible for developing statistical programmes with a view to designing censuses and surveys and implementation of field programmesto produce data at national, local and other small levels. Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics conducts censuses through the Census Wing. It is one of the six wings of BBS constituting of three sections namely Population Census, Agriculture Census and Economic Census. Censuses are held after every decade to maintain their decennial periodicity .Censuses provide basic data on housing and household characteristic education and literacy, birth, death, occupation, migration, economic activities, income, expenditure, savings, disability, industry & cottage industry agricultural crops, land ownership & landless rural transport livestock and poultry area under different crops etc.Bangladesh is a poor and density populated country of the world. For alleviation of poverty and for improvement of quality of life of the general masses it is required to bring planned changes in all the socio-economic sections through structural changes and modernization of industry, education, agriculture, trade, health etc. Therefore, toachieve the desired goals it is imperative to have necessary information and collection of data from the local regional and national levels of the country through censuses.The first population census was conducted in 1872, Agriculture Census in 1977 and Economic Census in 1986. Census is a massive national task requiring co-ordination and co-operation among different Govt., non-Govt.NGOs and private organizations. Success of modern censuses depends very much on a number of factors such as preparation, computerized control and quality preparation of enumeration area maps, reorganization of field, pre-testing of questionnaires, procurement of census logistics and other related factors.
